Thursday 4 June 2015 - Zakynthos

Up early to see the engineer.  He, like all the others looks at the engine, says it is fine and has no idea why the water isn’t heating up.  He says that the engine is a very good one.  Richard’s thought that the fan belt was too loose was not correct.  However the engineer thinks an electrician could help with the rev counter.  So he calls up the electrician he knows.

The electrician does manage to find what is wrong with the rev counter.  It is a bad connection.  One wire is not attached at all and even when it is, it is too corroded to make a good contact.  He rewires those and we do now have a rev counter.  But he also says he knows nothing about water heaters and cannot find any immediate electrical reason why it does not work.  Clearly what we need is a marine heating and plumbing expert, but there do not appear to be any of those.

So we have a morning putting a few things right.  I have another go at getting the adhesive marks off the boat, where we taped up the winches.  It is getting better.

We have a simple lunch on board of bought Greek dips.  It is now getting very hot.  So to make us feel we are on holiday we put on our bathing suits and go to find a beach.  Not far from the boat is a stony beach which has the advantage of having a café where if you buy a drink or something you can sit on their sun beds under umbrellas.  This is all very welcome.  So we have a couple of hours there.  And, we finally get in to the sea.  Mind you the water is a bit cold, but then that helps with the heat.  Richard says it reached 32C today!

Late afternoon we get back to the boat.  We are a bit lazy, but must do a little shopping to make dinner tonight and have food for the next couple of days.  I made a rattatouile this morning before it got hot so we have something else to eat for lunches.  But we still need something to pad out the left over Kelftico I took home from a restaurant two days ago.  On our travels we find a laundry!  Not a self service, but they will do a full load, wash and dry in 2 hours for 20 Euro.  I have made up my mind never to pass up a laundry opportunity, so I throw our tee shirts together to make up a load, and we now have clean clothes.  Mind you the load includes three shirts and a pair of shorts which need ironing.  I don’t know if it will ever be cool enough to do that.

So now we think about moving tomorrow.  We want to go to the mainland to a port that is accessible to Olympia.  Speaking to others here, they too will be going there.  Let’s hope we can get a mooring.  It all depends on the weather, which is a bit dodgy, with thunderstorms forecast.  We shall see what it is like in the morning.
